Description:
The Chilean Ministry of Education has designed this program to create new and real opportunities for both Chilean students and teachers to practice English with native English speakers. AIDE has been designated as one of the official partners in the program. You will work in the public school systems and be assigned to work with a Chilean English teacher. You will teach a class of about 25 students for 45-minute periods. You can expect to have approximately 25 hours of class time and work an additional 10 hours on lesson plans and extra curricular activities per week. Extra-curricular activities may include developing English conversation groups, dance classes, art projects, English fairs, and encouraging school community participation. You may also work with interested teachers to develop their oral proficiency and/or to design materials or activities for use in English classrooms. While on the program you will live with a local Chilean family. They will provide you not only with a nice home to stay at and meals, but also an invaluable insight into the Chilean culture.
Highlights:
You will be assigned to a public school in one of the following regions: Region de Arica y Parinacota, Region de Tarapaca or Region de Antofagasta (Great North Zone). You will live with a host family and receive a monthly stipend. You will work as an English-language teaching assistant to Chilean English teachers and lead extra-curricular activities for the school community. For many students and teachers, you will be their only chance to listen to and practice speaking in English with a native speaker. The program includes: - Airport pick-up - Accommodations with a host family and meals - Monthly stipend of USD $150 - Two-week all-expense paid orientation in the capital city of Santiago which includes TEFL training, orientation to Chilean culture and education, Spanish classes and cultural activities - All-expense paid local orientation in your host city - Assistance obtaining a temporary residence visa and Chilean I.D. card - Round-trip transportation from Santiago to your placement site - Ongoing personal support - Health/travel medical insurance *AIDE is a non-profit organization. Qualifications:
- 21 - 50 years old - Be a native English speaker from a country where English is the official language, or use English in your everyday language and have received your K-12 or undergraduate education in English - Basic level of Spanish - Hold an undergraduate degree - Previous experience teaching, working with children and/or traveling is not required but helpful
