Math and Science Jobs, Grades 7-12

  Guatemala

Length of Position: Late August 2010 to Late June 2011

Description: Progressive International School Building Science and Math Team: The Atitlan Multicultural Academy (AMA), a US-International College Preparatory School on the shores of Lake Atitlan in beautiful Panajachel, Guatemala is looking for math and science teachers at the high school and junior high level. Courses include junior high earth science, life science, and physical science, as well as math up to algebra. High school classes include biology, chemistry, physics, geometry, algebra II/trig and introductory calculus. If you can teach any combination of these courses, please apply (see details below).

AMA is a creative, dynamic, progressive school in which to teach. Our students go on to great colleges and universities in the US, Europe and Latin America. Our classes are small, our kids love school, and our faculty works as a team to shape and create this young, cutting-edge and non-corporate educational environment. Your work as a math/science teacher may well change the future of a nation!

Highlights: Lake Atitlan is absolutely, breathtakingly beautiful, and Panajachel is a safe, laid-back place to live. The town combines the best of a highland Mayan village and an international tourist destination with a significant expatriate population. The cost of living is low and the quality of life is high.

AMA teachers love their jobs! At AMA, you are encouraged to try out your best ideas, stretch yourself as a teacher, and participate fully in the creation and building of a world-class, progressive educational institution. We have an in-house teacher training program, so interns are welcome to apply. Meanwhile, for those with years of experience, we are searching for a long-term faculty member who will become the Chair of the Science and Math department. If the idea of living long-term in a transnational, multicultural, highland Guatemalan town and helping to build (and grow with) a topnotch, progressive international school appeals to you, this is the place for you!

AMA also encourages couples to apply. Please see our other positions listed on this site.

Qualifications: Teacher-trainees are welcome to apply with a B.A. or B.S., and are encouraged to apply for a full faculty position at the end of their training. AMA teachers universally have a B.A. or B.S., a teaching certificate, and in many (but not all) cases, a Masters in Education or in their field of study. Since our students will take the SAT, SAT IIs, and in many cases AP exams, some experience preparing students for high-level exams is preferred (these can be European or international; the material is the same). To keep our education accessible, we operate on a shoestring budget, so creativity, building skills, and the desire to help plan and build lab facilities are big plusses. Spanish is not necessary, but some experience traveling in the developing world is also a big plus. Couples are welcome to apply (see our other listings).
