Description:
The Atitlan Multicultural Academy is a joyous place in which to teach, and not just because it's located on the shores of Lake Atitlan--the world's most beautiful lake, flanked by three volcanoes and ringed by Mayan villages. Our school is teacher-run; the "Education Team" sets all day-to-day policy and has an enormous voice in how the school is run. Our small student body (about 100 total) ranges from 4 to 18 years old, and on Fridays we dismiss at midday, after an All-School assembly of great creativity. Creativity is the key; to be sure, you'll prep kids for APs and the SAT, but you'll also work with them to build science facilities in the Mayan highlands of Guatemala, do hands-on projects, and prepare themselves for life. Our upper-level classes include physics, chemistry, biology, and math to the level of introductory calculus.
Highlights:
Panajachel is a delightful, tranquil place in which to live and work. About 3-1/2 hours from Guatemala City, it boasts an international community with good weekend nightlife, with great live music scene. "Pana" is located in the Mayan highlands, and the culture is rich. Besides Spanish, local people speak Kaqchikel Mayan, and, across the lake, Tzutujil. AMA students represent over 20 nations and its teachers come from around the world. The school is team-run and here, "community" is more than just a saying; it's a way of life.
Qualifications:
We're looking for a creative, dynamic, certified science/math teacher to handle the highest-level courses in this progressive, U.S.-International K-12 College Preparatory School. Since this position could grow into head of department, the more experience and education you have, the better--but all applicants are encouraged to get in touch.
