English Language Instructors for Oman
Oman
Length of Position: 1 year
Description:
The Ministry of Higher Education has appointed CfBT to recruit English language Instructors for its Colleges of Applied Sciences in 3 cities - Ibri, Nizwa and Salalah. Successful applicants will be working directly for the Ministry but their living and welfare will be managed throughout the contract by CfBT. CfBT Education Trust (formerly the Centre for British Teachers) is an international education services organisation based in UK, which has been operating in Oman for over 20 years. CfBT manages projects in the UK and worldwide, particularly in developing countries. As an education charity we distribute over a million pounds each year for research and development into education. We recruit and manage senior educationalists for the Oman Ministries of Education and of Higher Education. We are registered in Oman as the Centre for British Teachers Education Services LLC. Almost all tertiary education in Oman is English medium and thus a confident command of English is required of all students. The task of English language Instructors appointed to the Colleges is therefore to provide students with the language and study skills needed to do academic work in English. Much of the teaching will be concentrated on the foundation year, before students enter their main courses of study, and will focus on raising their language levels. There will also be work on EAP and study skills. In addition students will be given support in English language throughout their time at the college. The normal working day is 8.00 am to 4.30 pm, with a maximum of 20 teaching hours per week. Non-working days are Thursday and Friday every week and Omani public holidays, as decreed by the Ministry. Days will be given in lieu if, under special circumstances, the Instructor is required to work these days. He/she may be invited to work during the summer term, in which case the Ministry will grant him/her additional remuneration.
Highlights:
Oman is widely considered to be the most attractive and interesting country in the Gulf to work in. There are ample opportunities for outdoor sports such as scuba diving, mountain walking and spectacular off-road driving. Ibri and Nizwa are provincial towns within easy reach of Muscat, the mountains and the coast; Salalah is in the far south, on the coast, with a semi-tropical climate. There are few safer countries in the world than Oman and the general atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, and welcoming to other cultures. The cost of living is low, compared to other countries in the region, and the majority of Instructors find that they can live and work comfortably in Oman whilst still contributing to their savings.
