Teach at International Community School in Singapore City, Singapore

  Singapore
  • Singapore City:
  • Singapore City

Description: Singapore is an island nation which gained its total independence in 1963. Settled by the English in the late 1700's, Singapore has grown to become a modern, efficient, comfortable place to live. The climate is equatorial; however, nearly every public building is air-conditioned. Public transportation is readily available, affordable, and dependable. Most everyone travels by public transportation. Singapore models itself after many western nations. English is one of the four official languages, so those moving here have no difficulty settling in and getting around. The government has done well in planning the city. Many parks and recreation areas are available on the island. Singapore is known for its variety with many western style stores and restaurants as well as Chinatown, Little India, and Arab Street. ICS is located on the south end of the island near Sentosa and close to two MRT (subway) stations.

A Word from the Principal

Words like love, respect, nurture, care, and discipline carry with them a responsibility. At ICS, we take that responsibility seriously. Each student is loved as a creation of God that has great potential for impacting this world in a positive way. All our parents are respected for the role they are given by God to rear their children. Each faculty member is honored for the contribution he or she makes to nurture, disciple, and teach our children. This community, working together, produces a place where everyone feels secure and confident.

History

In 1993 several expatriate businessmen, local Singaporean businessmen and missionaries organized and began what is now International Community School. Even at its beginning, ICS reflected true community involvement and support as Christians across denominations and vocations joined together. Their uniting purpose was to assure that there would be an affordable Christian international school. Since that beginning, ICS has grown to over 400 students from families working here in business and industry as well as those serving here in a variety of Christian ministries.

Spiritual

While all religious backgrounds are welcomed, our school embraces a Christian worldview, believing that the gospel of Jesus Christ transforms lives, enabling us to love God with all our hearts and our neighbors as ourselves. Our teachers, commissioned missionaries themselves, translate that faith into action for students by having daily Bible classes and voluntary Bible studies. The school also provides weekly chapel and an annual Spiritual Emphasis Week.

Intellectual

Traditional phonics and math programs are featured in the primary grades. In both primary and secondary grades, foreign language including both Mandarin and Spanish and various computer classes are offered. For secondary students, there are a variety of Advanced Placement courses. Our students consistently score above average on the Stanford Achievement Tests and do well on the SAT college entrance exam. Upon graduation, each student is awarded an American high school diploma.

Emotional

Coming from all over the world, our teachers provide a nurturing atmosphere in which our students' self-esteem can grow. They learn to love and respect others from different backgrounds. Our small class sizes gives teachers more time for each student, helping to build better relationships both in and out of the classroom.

Social

Our community boasts students from around the globe and provides a multitude of opportunities for making lifelong friends. Our community service program also encourages our students to be involved outside our school walls. Whether students play on the basketball team, work on the school newspaper, perform together at our International Night Program, or just talk together at lunchtime, our school gives its community of students a safe, comfortable atmosphere in which to grow socially.

Physical

Here at ICS, we believe active students are happy students. We encourage physical activity through daily physical education courses, voluntary extra-curricular activities, and opportunities for involvement in competitive sports. With lots of encouragement, team spirit, and clear instruction, teachers help students excel physically, gain confidence, and learn good sportsmanship.

What makes ICS different?

Imagine going to a school where parents are welcomed, where students respect their teachers, where truth is not relative, and where students learn the importance of doing their best, not just getting the best grade. Imagine a community built upon a Christian foundation where everyone is appreciated for who God created him or her to be. Visit ICS and experience what makes us different.

ICS Singapore uses an American-based curriculum with some modifications to reflect our Southeast Asian environment. We are fully accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) as well as the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), and our graduates have been accepted by an array of American and international universities.

We at ICS strive to challenge students to explore God's world around them through creative hands-on projects as well as teacher-student dialogue and interaction, while at the same time establishing a high standard of achievement. We want to encourage children to use their variety of unique gifts and stimulate them to think beyond the memorization of facts to know why things are the way they are, so that they possess a solid educational foundation.

Our teachers are the most important part of our curriculum, and they treat each student with love and respect while at the same time exercising firm discipline when necessary. Integration of Christian character and Bible teachings into our curriculum is a major focus of ICS.

ICS school hours are 8:30am to 3:00pm, Monday through Friday. In addition to our academic program, we offer an assortment of after-school, extracurricular activities including athletic teams, drama teams, music groups, and various clubs. We also offer an ESL program to those students whose first language is not English.

ICS is on an American school calendar starting in mid August and ending in early June.

Faculty at ICS come to be a part of a true community. Teachers who have a heart for children and desire to see them grow spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically will find ICS an ideal place to minister. ICS is looking for qualified teachers that are well prepared academically as well as being the loving, caring individuals that focus on the needs of the students in their classrooms.

Teach at International Community School in Singapore City, Singapore

Highlights:

All NICS schools are accredited by accrediting associations in the States. Therefore, our schools use American curriculum and follow the American calendar. We use a variety of American-based curricula. Each of the NICS schools has an administrator and curriculum committee that determines the best curriculum and resources for their school. Just like schools in the United States, the amount of resources depends on the size of the school.

We prefer teachers who have classroom experience, at the minimum: student teaching. While most mission organizations require a teacher to have at least two years experience, NICS is willing to invest the time and effort to help you get that experience. In return, we get energetic teachers with a teachable spirit and a willingness to learn. Final decisions regarding staff placement are made by the school's administrator.

Salary depends on the school and the location. NICS has three basic types of schools, Pioneer (Start up), Transitional (Becoming an International school) and International (Established). While each school has different positive aspects that make it unique, the Pioneer and Transitional may require the raising of some support and the International schools will provide a salary. The salary is one that will allow you to live comfortably in that country. By comfortable we mean able to cover all living expenses (Apartment, utilities, clothing, food and able to go out to eat a couple of times each week and still be able to save enough money to come home for Christmas or travel during the summer break).

Qualifications:
* K-12th Grade General Music Teacher
* High School Science Teacher

Since we are a Christian school, our policy is to hire only dedicated Christians who love the Lord Jesus with all their heart, soul, and mind. They must wholeheartedly endorse and embrace the principles forming our Foundation, including our Mission, Philosophy, Objectives, and Statement of Faith. Essential character qualities include a love for Jesus and a desire to share Him with others, a caring concern for children, an ability to teach well, a servant's heart, diligence, and a lot of patience and flexibility.
