Teach at West Nairobi School in Nairobi, Kenya
Kenya
Description:
Nairobi is the capital and largest city in Kenya, having about four million inhabitants. West Nairobi School (WNS) is located in Karen, Kenya, a suburb to the west of Nairobi. Adjacent to the Ngong Forest, WNS is very scenic and peaceful. The temperature is consistent year round, remaining between 20 and 27 degrees Celcius (65 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit) with rains occurring in November-December and again in March-May. English is the national language of Kenya and Kiswahili is the language of culture. Tourism is the number one industry in Kenya, followed closely by the tea and coffee industry. West Nairobi School is an international Christian community founded on biblical truths, existing to educate and nurture students to become responsible citizens and devoted followers of Jesus Christ. WNS is uniquely poised to serve both the missionary and national population in Kenya. By offering quality education, it frees parents to serve the people of Kenya and the rest of East Africa. West Nairobi School currently serves children from pre-school through the eleventh grade. In the 2009-2010 school year a senior class will be added. WNS follows the traditional American school calendar beginning in the middle of August and concluding at the end of May. We observe both major American and Kenyan holidays (please visit our website for the school calendar). WNS is looking for teachers who thrive in small classroom environments (less than 25) and who are dedicated to the total education of the children of missionaries and Kenyan nationals. WNS offers a family atmosphere in a picturesque location in a country known for its beauty, wildlife and friendliness. WNS students are respectful, motivated and enjoyable. We hope you will consider joining our family!
Highlights:
All NICS schools are accredited by accrediting associations in the States. Therefore, our schools use American curriculum and follow the American calendar. We use a variety of American-based curricula. Each of the NICS schools has an administrator and curriculum committee that determines the best curriculum and resources for their school. Just like schools in the United States, the amount of resources depends on the size of the school. We prefer teachers who have classroom experience, at the minimum: student teaching. While most mission organizations require a teacher to have at least two years experience, NICS is willing to invest the time and effort to help you get that experience. In return, we get energetic teachers with a teachable spirit and a willingness to learn. Final decisions regarding staff placement are made by the school's administrator. Salary depends on the school and the location. NICS has three basic types of schools, Pioneer (Start up), Transitional (Becoming an International school) and International (Established). While each school has different positive aspects that make it unique, the Pioneer and Transitional may require the raising of some support and the International schools will provide a salary. The salary is one that will allow you to live comfortably in that country. By comfortable we mean able to cover all living expenses (Apartment, utilities, clothing, food and able to go out to eat a couple of times each week and still be able to save enough money to come home for Christmas or travel during the summer break).
Qualifications:
* Social Studies Teacher There are 29 full-time and part-time staff members. The majority come from the United States, but others come from Australia, Britain, Canada, Kenya, and New Zealand. The teaching staff has been trained and certified, meeting the criteria established by the accrediting institutions in their home countries. Many come with advanced degrees.
