Enjoy comfortable living standards while teaching children in the lovely, wealthy Brunei; or teaching English to adults in the exciting, gorgeous Oman. CfBT Education Trust is a UK-based not-for-profit organisation that was founded over 40 years ago to provide educational expertise to a range of governments, from Germany to Morocco, Oman, Malaysia and Brunei. English Language Teaching was and remains an important part of their skill set. Brunei project: English Language Instructors for Primary and Secondary Schools in Brunei CfBT provides education services to Brunei Darassalam in support of the bilingual education policy to raise standards of English in line with the Government's aspirations for a diversified modern economy. CfBT achieves this through the selection, orientation, support and management of educational professionals. CfBT also provides a range of extra services such as teacher training, curriculum support, materials development and publishing. Candidates working in this program get free Cambridge English Language Teacher training. Teachers working in Brunei will work within a Primary or Secondary state school setting to teach English. The education system in Brunei, like that of many countries, is in a state of development as the government endeavours to establish a curriculum that best fits the needs of its citizens in a rapidly changing world. Schools in the country vary widely in terms of size, age, location and state of repair, from the very modern to those in real need of extensive renovation. CfBT employees must be prepared to serve in any school, in any district in the country, rural or urban, despite the implications for lifestyle. The Professional Department does its best to marry individual circumstances and preferences to schools and location, but the prime consideration has to be the needs of the client, the Ministry of Education. Nevertheless, no matter which district teachers are posted to, they are all assured of similar standards of housing, and access to welfare and professional support. The students in Brunei's schools are generally polite and well behaved and used to being firmly and clearly directed. They are familiar with being taught by non-Bruneian teachers, especially in secondary schools, and are tolerant of them and their lack of knowledge of the country, its language and its customs. Teachers should, however, remedy these deficiencies as soon as possible. The students have a heavy academic load, which many do not find easy to cope with, but, like children anywhere, they respond positively to teachers who demonstrate a concern for their welfare and a determination to help them as much as possible. Discipline and motivation problems can and do occur and new teachers must be prepared to work at acquiring the particular classroom management skills necessary to conduct lessons in a controlled and efficient manner. However, there is usually a refreshing lack of the antagonistic stance that students often adopt towards teachers in some other countries. Schools, like government offices, are closed on Fridays and Sundays, under normal circumstances, with Saturday being a working day. Brunei operates a four term year, each of 10/11 weeks, with a 10 day or 2 week holiday between each term and then 4 or 5 weeks in December. The school year comprises a total of about 200 days. There is also 'Hari Raya', a holiday to celebrate the completion of the Muslim fasting month. This falls 10 days earlier each year. There are also a number of public holidays. In the normal course of events, teachers are free to take leave during school holidays with the approval of the Ministry of Education. They are not permitted to take leave during term time and occasionally may be expected to attend workshops or national events during school holidays. OMAN Project: English Language Instructors for Colleges of Applied Sciences in Oman CfBT has been working with the Oman Ministry of Higher Education since 2006 to deploy well qualified English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instructors to the Colleges of Applied Sciences in Ibri and Nizwah. The task of English language Instructors appointed to the Colleges is to provide students with the language and study skills needed to do their academic courses through the medium of English. Much of the teaching is concentrated on the foundation year, before students enter their main courses of study, and focuses on raising their language levels and students are given support in English language throughout their time at the college. The language level of the students varies with most students being at Elementary / Lower Intermediate levels on entry to the Colleges. The normal working day is 8.00 am to 4.30 pm Saturday to Wednesday, with a maximum of 20 teaching hours per week. Non-working days are Thursday and Friday every week and Omani public holidays, as decreed by the Ministry. Days will be given in lieu if, under special circumstances, the Instructor is required to work these days. He/she may be invited to work during the summer term, in which case the Ministry will grant him/her additional remuneration. Teachers within this programme work under the direction and management of the Colleges of Applied Sciences, and are deployed and supported personally through CfBT's in-country staff including orientation, the sourcing of housing and flights.
Highlights:
ABOUT BRUNEI: An interesting location that is an exotic combination of Middle East and Southeast Asia, Brunei is a very small but, thanks to oil and gas reserves, a very rich country adjacent to Malaysia on the island of Borneo. Largely jungle and beach, Brunei was a British protectorate between 1888 and 1984, when it achieved independence. A safe and secure country governed by the longest serving family monarchy in the world (over 600 years!), there are no typhoons, earthquakes, or severe flooding to contend with, and the biggest environmental issues is seasonal haze resulting from forest fires in nearby Indonesia. Brunei's equatorial climate brings consistently high temperature, rainfall and humidity, with only minor seasonal variations. The average temperature is 28 degrees Celsius. Brunei is culturally linked to Malaysia with 67% of the population of Malaysian origin, with a significant Chinese population as well. Malay is the official language, but English is widely spoken. Bruneians love to eat out and there are many excellent restaurants in Brunei serving a wide variety of cuisines reflecting the wide range of cultural influences, thanks to the large number of foreign workers in the country. Brunei is a dry country: alcohol is not sold anywhere in the country and consumption of alcohol in public is prohibited by law. That said, non-Muslim visitors are allowed to bring in up to two litres of alcohol (wine or spirits) plus up to twelve cans of beer every 48 hours, and there's a wide array of duty-free shops just across the border in Malaysia to cater to this demand. However, alcohol permits must be obtained upon arrival in Brunei while going through customs. ABOUT OMAN: Oman is a moderate Middle Eastern country bordered by Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates with historical links to both Portugal and Great Britain. One of our favourite locations, Oman is a chameleon: whatever you want it to be, it will become. If you are seeking a modern country, you will spot its cosmopolitan shopping malls of Muscat and well-equipped waters ports facilities. If you are seeking antiquity and tradition, you will observe ancient trading towns and smell the aroma of frankincense. Oman is a beautiful country, and, moreover, very unspoiled. Green hills, beautiful beaches, hot sands await you in a country that has a number of Unesco world heritage sites, mountains and deserts, and which shares weather patterns with both India and the Middle East. Welcoming to western visitors, you will find western food, wine and beer served in the international hotel bars and restaurants in the largest cities. IBRI Ibri College of Applied Sciences is a three and a half hour drive from both Muscat and Dubai in the UAE. Ibri is a small town with limited retail outlets to provide you with the basics you need. It is close to Bat, which is the site of ancient burial tombs. There are also wadis (dry river beds) near by, and a wilderness for exploring. There is a hotel with a licensed restaurant, and Nizwa is an hour and a quarter away, where Western- style hotels with pools, health clubs and licensed restaurants are available. While welcoming and very interesting, there are no international schools or hotels in the area and we do not recommend this area for teachers with dependent school age children or non-teaching or non-Arabic speaking spouses.
