Highlights:
The Emirate of Sharjah with an area of 2,590 square kilometers, which is equivalent to 3.3 per cent of the country's total area excluding the islands, is the third largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates and the cultural capital of the Arab World as declared by the UNESCO in 1998. It is located between Dubai and Ras Al Khaima interrupted by a part of Ajman. Sharjah is 10 Kilometers away from Dubai and 76 Kilometers away from Abu Dhabi the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Sharjah is known for its strength as the industrial backbone of the U.A.E... 40% of the total number of industries in the U.A.E. is based in Sharjah. The majority of these industries are petrochemicals, textiles, leather, food and basic non-metal industries. Sharjah contains the main administrative and commercial centers along with cultural and traditional projects. Links with the outside world are provided by Sharjah International Airport, Port Khalid, Port Khorfakkan and Hamriyah Free Zone Port. Living in Sharjah means experiencing a different and a unique life style. All the outstanding facilities of accommodations, multinational education, medical services, shopping malls, museums, clubs and a large variety of sports and social activities to enjoy; make Sharjah the perfect place to set up your business and reside. Sharjah, The Culture Rich Emirate Sharjah the city is increasingly populated by people who work in Dubai but can't afford to live there. However, this is far from being a dormitory town. Sharjah city is to be found inside the emirate of the same name, and it's fairly easy to get to and from Dubai. It is about a fifteen minute drive unless you hit traffic. (To avoid this, do not travel between 5pm-7pm and lunchtime.) You can get a taxi or a minibus from Dubai but there are no minibuses on the return route, so you will have to get a taxi back. There is no bus network within the city, but it is quite a compact area, and you should be able to walk everywhere. Alternatively, take a taxi around, which is quite cheap. This city is known for its cultural attractions, and with good reason. The Heritage Area of the city features buildings built from traditional materials, to traditional designs. This area is home to the Islamic museum, which contains coins, handwritten Korans and other Arabic treasures. Admission is free, and it's well worth a look. Near Cultural Square, you will find the Archaeological Museum, which is also free to enter. This includes reconstructions of houses. Each of its five galleries covers a different era of the emirate's documented past. Children and adults alike will love the Sharjah Desert Park. It contains the Children's Farm, where children can feed farm animals and have pony rides. More famously, the Desert Park contains the Arabia's Wildlife Centre, thought to be Arabia's most important captive breeding centre for endangered species. There is also a large indoor aviary, as well as outdoor enclosures featuring large animals, including Arabian wolves. Sharjah is definitely worth a look, however you should be aware that Sharjah is probably the most conservative of all the emirates. There is a ban on alcohol and dress codes are very conservative, especially for women- women should avoid wearing short skirts and tight clothing but need not cover their hair. Also, unmarried couples are not allowed to live together in this emirate, as is the case in most Middle Eastern countries. Schools differ, however, on how strictly (or if) this code is enforced! What our teachers living in Sharjah say.. "The children are well behaved. Much less stress than teaching at home"
"The part I like best is the cheaper lifestyle when compared to Dubai. As an added bonus, women don't have to stand in the queue at the post office!" "The central Souq and Almazer beach are pure utopia. In Sharjah you get a real insight into the old heritage of the UAE" "Western women can get stared at sometimes, but it's not meant to be threatening and you get used to it." "What do I wish I brought with me? More alcohol from duty free at the airport and my favourite crisps!"
