Music Teacher Needed at UK School in Kuwait

Surra
Length of Position: 1 year contract
Description:
We are a medium sized, well-established UK curriculum school in Kuwait. Our name merely implies a teaching of the UK National Curriculum, rather than indication of student nationality. Indeed the population is predominantly Kuwaiti with 900 students in the affluent resident area of Jabriya. Established in 1993 with a British curriculum, teachers need to be aware that they are teaching local children whose first language is not English comprising of a gender mix of 90% boys 10% girls. That is not to imply that behavior is poor quite the reverse. Boys will be boys but there are no major discipline problems. Class sizes are no more than 25; and year groups are setted in threes according to ability and language development. Usual facilities; typical school ethos and atmosphere. One extra-curricular activity is expected every week. The school will be introducing A/S and A levels soon. The school is recognized as an official London examinations international centre of learning (edexcel international 2005) and accredited by the Council of International Schools (Feb 2003) and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. School Facilities We are typical of your international school. There are the usual ICT and music suites, libraries and gymnasiums. Teacher Profile UK teachers are preferred. Single and married teacher couples are welcome to apply. Those with children hoping to place them in the same school need to be warned that they may not fit on a cultural level. Teachers need to bring with them an understanding that this is not a typical British expatriate school; English is not the first language and teachers need to demonstrate an ability to differentiate and present material that reflects a cultural awareness. Teachers in the primary school need to be able to address a wide range of English speaking ability. We are happy to take newly qualified teachers; the school is implementing a NQT program.
Highlights:
Life in Kuwait It is necessary to conduct the relevant research before submitting an application. Kuwait has developed radically over the past few years providing a rich, varied and secure expatriate lifestyle, but it is not for everyone. Kuwait from an environmental perspective is not a very exciting country; indeed there are vast arid desert plains and that is about it, but it does offer a very rich cultural experience providing a healthy balance with more western activities. There are many social gatherings (theatre groups / many more) and sporting activities. There are many hotels, gyms and beaches, and the country offers a dazzling range of cuisines to suit everyone's tastes, not to mention all the fast food chains you can name. Kuwait is also very central to the Gulf and Middle East region. They have a new low cost airline, Al Jazeera, and there are many school holiday opportunities to explore places such as Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates and Oman, as well as those countries of South East Asia. Kuwait is a dry country; many travel agents offer weekend packages to Bahrain and Dubai if you fancy a weekend of drinking and partying. Kuwait is a 'dry' country - no alcohol is served publicly (though this is likely to change shortly), however most teachers find that enterprising shopkeepers will sell all the ingredients to 'brew your own' next to each other on the shop shelves. Kuwait is a sporty country - with the absence of bars/pubs there are lots of expatriate clubs for everything from drama to windsurfing to sailing to cricket.
