Brazil Teaching English

  Brazil
  • Rio de Janeiro:
  • Rio de Janeiro

Length of Position: Minimum of 2 weeks

Description: Volunteer with disadvantaged children from the local Pavao Pavaozinho community. Your enthusiasm, together with newly acquired skills gained from the TEFL course included in the programme, will be invaluable to the educational development of the local community.

The Brazil volunteer project is located in the beautiful city of Rio de Janeiro, on Brazil's Atlantic coast. As a volunteer, you will be working directly with the children, helping with all ages from infants to teenagers. Volunteers will be assisting in the English education programme at the centre, including teaching classes, tutoring students, and helping organize scholastic activities. You may also be given the responsibility of teaching your own individual class if the need arises!

Your volunteering duties will involve working directly with the children, helping with all ages from infants to teenagers. You will provide support to the English education program at the centre; this will range from teaching classes, tutoring students, and helping organize scholastic activities. If you're feeling confident you may also be given the responsibility of taking lessons for your own individual class if the need arises!

In addition to working with students in the English classroom, volunteers will have the chance to help in specific areas such as sport, art, computers and childcare in the nursery. The bonus of this project is its flexibility; feel free to volunteer for anything that interests you!

There is an opportunity to do additional volunteering in your own time, outside of your scheduled English classes, however, if this is your intention, please make this clear to the coordinator at the start of your programme. You can choose where to provide the extra support. The additional activities might include helping children brush their teeth and combing their hair. The ability to play an instrument always brings delight! So, if music is your thing, feel free to bring your instrument along.

Brazil Teaching English

Highlights: Brazil is the fifth largest country in the world, covering almost half of the continent and bordering every country on it except for Chile and Ecuador. With all that space its no surprise that it's home to everything from untouched beaches to wild jungles and exciting cities and that it spans across four time zones! Framed by the Amazon River to the north, the Amazon basin covers a massive 60% of Brazil's surface. Containing the world's largest rainforest there are adventure opportunities aplenty and with a coastal strip 9,000km long, you are sure to find some beautiful beaches!

Brazil has a long and interesting history. Discovered by the Portuguese in 1500, it gained its independence in 1822, however, its time under Portuguese rule has left a lasting impression on the country. Brazil is the only Portuguese-speaking nation in Latin America, and it has the largest Roman Catholic population in the world, with 74% of its people following Catholicism. With a climate perfect for growing sugarcane, the slave trade is subsequently a major part of Brazil's history and this continued into the 19th Century when trade moved to coffee, but was finally abolished in 1888.

Brazil now benefits from a diverse population bringing together a great mixture of sounds and sights. The culture of the country revolves around eating, dancing and music. It is a massive sporting nation most popular, of course, being football, with the national team winning the World Cup a record five times. On the whole, the people are energetic and inviting and are sure to make you feel really welcome.
