Sri Lanka
Length of Position: Minimum of 4 weeks
Durations of Program: 2-4 weeks and 5-8 weeks
Typical Duration of Program: 2-4 weeks
Dates: First Monday of select months, please contact us for details.
Description:
Volunteers will teach children between six and 19 years old. There are also opportunities to organise extra-curricular activities in the afternoon such as music, drama, arts and sports. Most of the English teaching Sri Lanka volunteer projects are close to the medieval city of Polonnaruwa. In your spare time you can visit the local archaeological ruins, go jungle trekking, biking, fishing or visit wild life parks. The children will get you involved with local life, and the four weeks will fly by. It is possible to extend your stay if you wish. The programme is unavailable in April, August and December due to school holidays. In the first term (January to March) the emphasis is more on Sports, and the final term (September to November) is more exam-oriented.
Highlights:
The island of Sri Lanka has had a turbulent history, marked by colonial feuding and a long period of repression for its native people. In recent times, this population has itself turned to internal conflict, with the Tamil minority demanding a separate state and employing terrorist tactics since the 1970s. This civil struggle has finally died down and the country seems to be experiencing a period of calm. This tranquillity allows us to notice and appreciate Sri Lanka for what it truly is: a country brimming with fascinating ancient architecture, surrounded on all sides by palm-fringed sandy beaches, and a place where you are never far away from mountainous greenery. Marco Polo once declared that Sri Lanka was one of the best islands on earth.
