Teach Immersion Chile

Length of Position: Six months: May-November

Description: CIEE sends volunteer teachers to the O'Higgins (6th) Region of Chile on a Six-month Teach Immersion program. Home of the Chilean huaso and an area famous for its winemaking, surfing, and copper mines, it is an ideal location, just south of Santiago, to live like a local with a family and immerse fully into Chilean culture. You will act as a teaching assistant to local Chilean teachers eager to have a native English speaker encourage their classroom along. A highlight of this new program is the homestay experience, allowing you to truly experience life como un chileno through your host family, colleagues, and students. Orientation takes place over several days in Santiago and then again on location in the O'Higgins Region, and you'll meet up again with your fellow CIEE teachers and staff half way through your semester at a mid-year workshop that allows you to share and boost your Teach Immersion experience.

* Accommodations and meals with a host family
* A monthly stipend of CLP 85.000
* Assistance obtaining a Temporary Residence Visa and Chilean I.D. card
* An English speaking regional coordinator to help you with both professional and cultural difficulties
* Optional ~ Participation in winter camp activities between semesters
* A mid-program workshop conducted by CIEE
* An end of program evaluation conducted by the Ministry of Education in Santiago
* International medical insurance and 24-hour worldwide assistance provided through the CIEE iNext travel card
* 24-hour in-country emergency support services via the CIEE Santiago office and via your local coordinator
* Internationally recognized Certification (BULATS) to measure Spanish language learning
* Program certification by the Chilean Ministry of Education

* Typical teaching load: 35 hour per week. This breaks down to 25 classroom hours and 10 hours of extracurricular activities. Additional time may be necessary for planning and preparing.

Orientation
All Teach Immersion participants take active part in a four-day orientation program in Santiago that is conducted by experienced staff from the CIEE Santiago office and from the Ministry of Education.

Location
Placements for the Six-month Teach Immersion program will be in the O'Higgins (6th) region of Chile including Rancagua, San Fernando, and Santa Cruz; but are not limited to these locations. Occasionally, a volunteer may be placed in the Maule (7th) region if necessary. Located in the Central Valley of Chile, these regions are only a few hours from Santiago!

Qualifications: You do not need to be a teacher with extensive international experience to apply! Whether you're major was art history, zoology, or anything in between; if you have a positive attitude and solid work ethic and a genuine interest in education, your academic background will serve you well in the classroom - this time from the teacher's side of the desk.

CIEE and the Chilean Ministry of Education are looking for well-rounded applicants who are independent, adventurous, and who adapt well to new situations. Participants must be able to expect the unexpected and thrive in a changing environment! It's essential that participants are self-motivated, responsible, and recognize that their first priority is to their school and their teaching assignment. 110% commitment to the program is essential.

Basic eligibility requirements for the Teach Immersion in Chile program include:
* A bachelor's degree in any major
* English as a first language or you use English every day. Applicants must have received their K-12 or undergraduate education in the English Language.
* At minimum, basic Spanish skills (orientation is in Spanish!). Preference will be given to candidates with strong Spanish language abilities.
* Interest in Chilean culture and developing countries
* A high level of commitment, responsibility and flexibility
* A spirit of public service
